Favourite movie quotes

Hi everyone :)) I haven’t posted for a while..in fact I haven’t posted as frequently as previously. But I’ll try to! I’ve been a little busy and a little tired recently and given the lack of post ideas, I found myself stuck when trying to write a post. I’ll be watching Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut right now and I’ve been wanting to review Dogville which I recently saw…so there’s finally some fresh material for me to review again :)) How are you guys doing? Sorry if I haven’t replied to your comments, I’ll be doing it soon. For now, I figured I’d do a post on some of my favourite movie quotes. I think I’ll start making this a feature of my blog where I’ll have a post once every week or so dedicated to some of my favourite quotes in film :)) Enjoy!

Taxi Driver – “May 10th. Thank God for the rain which has helped wash away the garbage and trash off the sidewalks. I’m workin’ long hours now, six in the afternoon to six in the morning. Sometimes even eight in the morning, six days a week. Sometimes seven days a week. It’s a long hustle but it keeps me real busy. I can take in three, three fifty a week. Sometimes even more when I do it off the meter. All the animals come out at night – whores, skunk pussies, buggers, queens, fairies, dopers, junkies, sick, venal. Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets. I go all over. I take people to the Bronx, Brooklyn, I take ’em to Harlem. I don’t care. Don’t make no difference to me. It does to some. Some won’t even take spooks. Don’t make no difference to me.”

“Loneliness has followed me my whole life. Everywhere. In bars, in cars, sidewalks, stores, everywhere. There’s no escape. I’m God’s lonely man.”

Whiplash – ” Exactly. Parker’s a young kid, pretty good on the sax. Gets up to play at a cutting session, and he fucks it up. And Jones nearly decapitates him for it. And he’s laughed off-stage. Cries himself to sleep that night, but the next morning, what does he do? He practices. And he practices and he practices with one goal in mind, never to be laughed at again. And a year later, he goes back to the Reno and he steps up on that stage, and plays the best motherfucking solo the world has ever heard. So imagine if Jones had just said: “Well, that’s okay, Charlie. That was all right. Good job. “And then Charlie thinks to himself, “Well, shit, I did do a pretty good job.” End of story. No Bird. That, to me, is an absolute tragedy. But that’s just what the world wants now. People wonder why jazz is dying.”

No country for old men – “I was sheriff of this county when I was twenty-five years old. Hard to believe. My grandfather was a lawman; father too. Me and him was sheriffs at the same time; him up in Plano and me out here. I think he’s pretty proud of that. I know I was. Some of the old time sheriffs never even wore a gun. A lotta folks find that hard to believe. Jim Scarborough’d never carried one; that’s the younger Jim. Gaston Boykins wouldn’t wear one up in Comanche County. I always liked to hear about the oldtimers. Never missed a chance to do so. You can’t help but compare yourself against the oldtimers. Can’t help but wonder how they would have operated these times. There was this boy I sent to the ‘lectric chair at Huntsville Hill here a while back. My arrest and my testimony. He killt a fourteen-year-old girl. Papers said it was a crime of passion but he told me there wasn’t any passion to it. Told me that he’d been planning to kill somebody for about as long as he could remember. Said that if they turned him out he’d do it again. Said he knew he was going to hell. “Be there in about fifteen minutes”. I don’t know what to make of that. I sure don’t. The crime you see now, it’s hard to even take its measure. It’s not that I’m afraid of it. I always knew you had to be willing to die to even do this job. But, I don’t want to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don’t understand. A man would have to put his soul at hazard. He’d have to say, “O.K., I’ll be part of this world.”

Forrest Gump – “What’s normal anyways?”

“I’m not a smart man but I know what love is.”

American Beauty –  For those who have seen the film, you know what I’m talking about. Here’s perhaps my favourite movie scene ever where Kevin Spacey delivers a very measured yet powerful performance with just a few lines. It’s not an iconic or particularly interesting piece of dialogue/exchange, but it’s damn well something that moved me so much. Make American Beauty your viewing for this week if you haven’t seen it, you won’t regret it.

Lester Burnham: How’s Jane?

Angela Hayes: What do you mean?

Lester Burnham: I mean, how’s her life? Is she happy? Is she miserable? I’d really like to know, and she’d die before she’d ever tell me about it.

Angela Hayes: She’s… she’s really happy. She thinks she’s in love.

Lester Burnham: Good for her.

Angela Hayes: How are you?

Lester Burnham: (After a long pause) God, it’s been a long time since anybody asked me that…I’m great.

Hey Courtney :)) Ahh, I’ll head on over to your blog in a bit, sorry I haven’t been too active recently 😦
Such a wonderful film isn’t it? That scene almost moved me to tears. Still more powerful than tear-jerking scenes though. Indeed 🙂

I’ve mentioned before how much I loved American Beauty. I saw it with my son, just before putting him on a plane back to his home after he’d flown out to be with my mom and I as she went through dying. The movie was such an affirmation of life for us.

It burned into my mind when I saw it. There’s something so helpless about the officer’s words, even he couldn’t stop a force of nature. It’s one of your favourites isn’t it?
