Purple Heart; A Poem

Back from the monstrous war

Where they slept next to turrets

The morning dew were pellets

These survived it all and more

‘Soldiers y’all remember the drill?’

‘This is your big night.’

Deep down, big nights had blood and shrills

One by one they went up front

The medals of honour so neatly pinned

The constant streams of camera flash

Flashbacks from explosives jolt and stun

Applause and claps filled the air

Purple heart; Bravery personified

What about the purple hearts

Losing their last beat on the battlefield.
